Ian Duncan Smith has said the real problem with Zero-hours contracts, wasn’t the fact that last year UK firms used 1.8 million zero hour contracts or that many people have to wake up every morning, hoping for a text to say that they might have a few hours work that day. That ‘workers’ on Zero-hours don’t know week on week how much they will earn, if they will have enough money to feed themselves and they family or pay they rent or bills.
NO the real probelm according to IDS, is the name!
On a TV interview Mr Duncan Smith said that zero-hours contracts were ‘wrongly named’.
He told the BBC: ‘It should be flexible hours contracts.”
On Sky news he said : ” I think, with respect, the media and others have got this completely wrong, the flexible-hours contracts I’m talking about which are named ‘zero-hours contracts’, they are taken by people who want that flexibility.”
TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: ‘Whatever you call a zero-hours contract, it is still a recipe for insecurity and exploitation, where the boss holds all the power.
‘Nothing sums up what is wrong with this Government’s approach to work and how out of touch they are with the way most people live their lives than this celebration of the zero-hours contract.
‘If you put lipstick on a pig, it is still a pig. But as ‘zero-hours contracts’ is a bit of a mouthful, perhaps we could call them ‘IDS jobs’ in the future.’
