ONE OF THE UK’s MOST DISABLED-FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES, DUE TO BE SHUT!

10/05/16 Hastings.

On Tuesday 8th March 2016 it was announced that the University of Brighton would be shutting down it’s three sites in Hastings within the next two years.

The decision made by the Board of Governors, was made after a presentation was given to them by a ‘independent’ company, who the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Debra Humphris had commissioned to do a report. A report Unions have applied a FOI to see, which was turned down and is currently been appealed.

The decision came as a complete shock to the students, staff and local residents.

It will effect over 600 students, hundreds of staff and have a massive impact on the local economy.

£12m of public money was spent on the three sites, in one of the most deprived areas in England.

The sites were designed to be one of the most accessible Campuses for disabled people in the Country.

This decision has been made without any consultation with staff, students or unions.

There have been no impact assessments, especially for disabled Students.

Mark SU Harvey, Officer for Disabilities at the University of Brighton said:

‘ Having worked for several different Universities giving advice on disabled access and having visited many, it is notable the lack of  disabled access in these places.

‘ However, Hastings is a unique place with full disabled access to all buildings; it is small and situated in an understanding town with lots of support for students from caring staff. This should be both preserved and encouraged, as other universities have to create policies to make this happen.

‘ After attending the recent NUS Disabled delegation in Manchester, I realized how envious others are of what we have in Hastings. I cannot see how management could justify removing this, when other campuses fall far short of the mark.’

BLAIR’S FIRST OPEN ATTACK ON CORBNY’S LABOUR PARTY

image

Tony Blair has not openly commented on the Labour party under Jeremy Corbyn, until now.

But In the Christmas issue of Right-wing UK magazine ‘The Spectator’,  the former Prime Minister has written a blog attacking the way Jeremy Corbyn is running the Labour party and the direction Corbyn is taking the party.

” All wings of the Labour Party which support the notion of the Labour Party as a Party aspiring to govern, rather than as a fringe protest movement agree on the tragedy of the Labour Party’s current position.”

Blair forgets that Jeremy Corbyn was elected Leader of the Labour party with the biggest mandate from members in living memory, with almost 60% voting for him.

Blair contues: ” Right now we’re in danger of not asking the right questions never mind failing to get the right answers. All of it is about applying values with an open mind; not boasting of our values as a way of avoiding the hard thinking the changing world insists upon.”

Blair forgets that membership for the Labour party is higher than at anytime under him.

Whichever party people from the centre left in the UK support. All would agree that Blair’s vision for our Country is out of date and is for the few and not the many.

BEHIND THE SPIN, MILLIONS OF WORKING FAMILIES STILL HIT BY WELFARE CUTS!!

BEHIND THE SPIN, MILLIONS OF WORKING FAMILIES STILL HIT BY WELFARE CUTS!!

Research commissioned from the House of Commons library shows that
next year over half a million working familes, already on Universal credit, will lose up to over £2500.

By 2020, when Universal credit will be fully rolled out, Some 2.6 million working families will lose an average £1,600 as a result of benefit changes due to come into force under the universal credit system.

Owen Smith, the shadow work and pensions secretary, said
” It is now quite apparent that the chancellor only offered a partial reversal of his cuts to working people’s incomes in last week’s statement. Next year, half a million families may be hit by cuts to tax credit’s successor, universal credit,”

“This newly commissioned research shows that working families on universal credit still face devastating losses next year. A 23-year-old single parent, with two children working 30 hours a week on the minimum wage, is set to lose £2,500.”

In its analysis of the autumn statement and spending review, the IFS said other commentators had been wrong to describe the chancellor’s measures as an end to austerity. The IFS director, Paul Johnson, said: “This is not the end of austerity. This spending review is still one of the tightest in post-war history.”

FEEDING, CLOTHING HOMELESS BANNED IN HASTINGS AGAIN!!

❤UPDATED❤

On 26th Aug, a member of Love Kitchen, Hastings, was contacted by Hastings Council, who  two and a half months ago tried to shut down Love Kitchen. But backed down after a petition, protest, media and social media campaign. The council have now said if Love kitchen do not get a food operator licence, insurance etc. It will be shut down. Just as winter is coming!

On Sunday 28th June Love Kitchen Hastings, a group of Hastings residents, inspired by Love Activists London, to feed and clothe Homeless people, were told that their regular weekly stall in Hastings town centre must stop!

Chris Oliver, founding member of Love Kitchen has been in conversation with Hastings Council over the last few week. Chris said; ” At first they wanted to move us down into an alleyway where we “would not be seen” . I negotiated with them to use the upper circle outside Poundstretcher. Today they turned up and told us that if we continued we could face prosecution as we did not have a Street Trading Licence. They then said we would not receive one anyway. They said that we were also breaking food safety laws but have not explained exactly what is required. If we get shutdown then I fear that many regulars will not eat on Sunday. It has been referred to as Suicide Sunday which is why we come out this day.”

Love Kitchen, Hastings was set up by local people in February 2015, after being inspired by Love Activists, London, who over Christmas 2014 occupied a bank in the heart of the West-End of London, to shelter, feed and clothe Homeless people and highlight the growing issue of poverity.

Many people all over the UK have also  set up Love Kitchens.Brighton Love Kitchen is in the heart of the city and has not been stopped.

Love Kitchen member Zeeta Mcbrine
Said : ”  I am just shocked at the lack of compassion and support the council have given us. We are all human and need the same basic things to survive in this world. Hastings council have already let these people down by allowing the system to discard them onto the streets. The council have a duty of care and they have failed each and every one of the people whom come to us, it is now the communities chance to succeed where the council had failed.

There are many Love Kitchens around the UK that are fully supported by their local councils and I cannot see any reason other than ignorance as to why Hastings Council have taken this unfair and unwarranted decision to close us down and threaten us with prosecution. ”

Anton Burton on Hastings Council’s decision said: ”  As the organiser of the St Leonard’s street market on kings road I can assure you that you do not need a street trading consent to give away clothes as long as you are not charging, although you may be required to have public liability insurance, there are issues with food but nothing that cannot be easily worked towards.”

Hastings Council have so far failed to respond to questions or comment on the ban.

When asked why the action by Hastings Council to shut Love Kitchen down should matter to people, Chris Oliver said : ” It would be difficult to count everyone it has helped. The people that come up to the table have welcomed the support and some cases come up for the chance to be treated like a human for once. Just being spoken to and listened to as normal person is something that many miss out on.”

Please support Love Kitchen, Hastings and help change Hastings Council mind.
